Permanent Vacation (2022)

Our memory is a curated version of the past. Just as a family album selectively preserves only happy moments, the unconscious mind filters out negative experiences to protect our present consciousness. Through this process of selection, unpleasant memories are exiled to the margins of consciousness, but they occasionally resurface unexpectedly and assert their presence. Permanent Vacation is a deliberate attempt to awaken repressed memories sedimented in the unconscious. Contrary to photography’s conventional function of reproducing the visible, this project attempts to access the invisible realm of the unconscious by purposefully concealing parts of the image.

Permanent Vacation consists of two parts: Permanent Smiles and Permanent Legs.

In Permanent Smiles, stereotypical smiles commonly found in family albums are isolated by leaving only a narrow horizontal slit across the original photograph. This slit runs from left to right along the center of the mouth, while the rest of the image is covered with soil. Detached from their original subjects and contexts, these anonymous smiles become ambiguous, leaving it unclear whether they convey a friendly smile or a contemptuous sneer.

In Permanent Legs, family photographs in the ‘stand at attention’ pose are inverted and mounted on aluminum plates, then carefully inserted into meticulously cut wooden panels. Aligned along the starting point of the legs, the composition creates the illusion that the legs have been sharply severed and turned upside down.

The function of the family album is to sustain memory and preserve the vitality of the past. However, the act of cutting family photographs severs that vitality and turns them into “dead photographs.” To construct a cemetery of such dead photographs, the installation borrows the form of gravestones and burial sites. Once decontextualized, the photographs lose their original role as vessels of memory and reach the end of their life as family photographs. This act of cutting, performed now by the present self, sends the past self on a permanent vacation from which there is no return.

우리는 편집된 과거를 기억한다. 행복한 순간들만 선별적으로 수집한 가족앨범처럼 우리의 무의식은 부정적인 과거를 선택적으로 제외해 현재의 의식을 보호한다. 이 선발과정에서 탈락한 불쾌한 기억은 의식 변방으로 유배되지만, 때로는 기습적으로 도발하며 그 존재를 과시한다. 《영원한 휴가》는 이 무의식 속에 침전된 부정적인 기억을 의도적으로 흔들어 깨운다. 가시적인 대상을 재현하는 사진의 전통적인 기능과 반대로 사진의 일부를 가리는 방법을 통해, 비가시의 영역인 무의식에 접근해보고자 한다.

《영원한 휴가》는 <영원한 미소들>과 <영원한 다리들>로 구성된다.

<영원한 미소들>은 가족앨범에 편재한 전형적인 미소의 위아래를 기준으로 원본 사진의 좌우를 가로지르는 가느다란 틈새만을 남기고 나머지를 흙으로 덮은 작업이다. 본래의 주체와 상황으로부터 분리된 익명의 미소는 친근한 미소인지 경멸하는 조소인지 본래의 의도를 판단하기 힘든 중의적인 상태로 변환된다.

<영원한 다리들>은 차렷 자세의 사진을 거꾸로 뒤집어 얇은 알루미늄판에 압착한 후 정밀하게 가공된 판재에 삽입한 작업이다. 가족사진의 정형화된 차렷 자세에서 다리 시작점을 기준으로 판재를 베어내듯 날카롭게 삽입된 사진은 마치 다리가 거꾸로 잘린 듯한 착시를 일으킨다.

가족앨범의 기능은 기억을 지속시켜 과거의 생명력을 유지하는데 있다. 가족사진을 자르는 행위는 이러한 생명력을 절단시킴으로 ‘죽은 사진’을 만들어 낸다. ‘죽은 사진’이 모여있는 ‘사진의 무덤’을 구성하기 위해 설치 단계에서 공동묘지의 무덤과 비석의 형식을 빌린다. 문맥이 훼손된 사진은 기억의 지속성이라는 본래의 기능을 상실하고 가족사진으로서의 생을 마감한다. ‘지금’의 내가 현재의 의지로 행한 절단이 ‘과거’의 나를 돌아올 수 없는 영원한 휴가에 보내는 것이다.
