Permanent Vacation (2022)

우리는 편집된 과거를 기억한다. 행복한 순간들만 선별적으로 수집한 가족앨범처럼 우리의 무의식은 부정적인 과거를 선택적으로 제외해 현재의 의식을 보호한다. 이 선발과정에서 탈락한 불쾌한 기억은 우리의 의식 저편으로 사라지는 듯 하지만 우리의 내면 깊숙히 자리잡고 때로는 기습적으로 되살아나 그 존재를 과시하기도 한다. 《영원한 휴가》는 이 무의식 속에 침전되어 있는 나쁜 기억을 깨우기 위한 의도적 촉발을 일으킨다. 가시적인 것을 시각적으로 재현하는 사진 본래의 기능과 반대로 오히려 사진의 일부를 가림으로써 사진에 담을 수 없는, 즉 눈에 보이지 않는 무의식을 조명하고자 한다.

《영원한 휴가》는 <영원한 미소들>과 <영원한 다리들>로 구성된다.

<영원한 미소들>은 가족앨범에 편재한 전형적인 미소의 위와 아래를 기준으로 원본 사진의 좌와 우를 가로지르는 긴 틈새만을 남겨두고 나머지를 흙으로 덮은 작업이다. 주인과 상황으로부터 잘려나간 익명의 미소는 친근한 미소인지 비웃는 미소인지 본래의 의도를 가늠하기 힘든 중의적인 미소로 탈바꿈한다.

<영원한 다리들>은 차렷 자세의 사진을 거꾸로 뒤집어 얇은 알루미늄판에 압착시킨 후 정교하게 가공된 판재에 삽입한 작업이다. 가족사진의 정형화된 차렷 자세에서 다리의 시작 부분을 기준점으로 삼아 판재를 베어내듯 삽입된 사진은 마치 다리가 거꾸로 잘린 듯한 착시를 일으킨다.

가족앨범의 기능은 기억을 지속시켜 과거의 생명력을 유지시키는데 있다. 가족사진을 자르는 행위는 이러한 생명력을 절단시킴으로 ‘죽은 사진’을 만들어 낸다. ‘죽은 사진’이 모여있는 ‘사진의 무덤’을 만들기 위해 설치 단계에서 공동묘지의 무덤과 비석의 형식을 빌린다. 문맥이 훼손된 사진은 기억의 지속성이라는 본래의 기능을 상실하고 가족사진으로서의 생을 마감한다. ‘지금’의 내가 현재의 의지로 행한 절단이 ‘과거’의 나를 돌아올 수 없는 영원한 휴가에 보내는 것이다.

Our memory is a curated version of the past. In order to preserve our current state of consciousness, the unconscious mind selectively filters out negative memories. This phenomenon is evident in family albums, where only photographs capturing happy moments are included. Through this process of selection, the memories that were not chosen seem to fade from our consciousness. However, they actually remain deeply ingrained within us and occasionally resurface unexpectedly, reminding us of their presence. The project called "Permanent Vacation" intentionally aims to awaken these forgotten memories that have been left behind in the unconscious. It explores the hidden aspects of the unconscious by concealing parts of photographs, even though the original purpose of photography is to visually represent what is observed.

Permanent Vacation comprises two parts: Permanent Smiles and Permanent Legs.

In Permanent Smiles, the stereotypical smiles commonly found in family albums are isolated horizontally, stretching from the left to the right edge of the original photographs. The section right above and below the smiling lips is cropped, resulting in images that resemble long, narrow windows. Anonymous smiles are detached from their original owners and contexts, creating ambiguity as to whether they convey a friendly smile or a contemptuous sneer.

In Permanent Legs, ‘stand up straight’ family photographs are mounted on aluminum plates and carefully inserted into intricately cut wooden bars. These photographs are then presented upside down, with the starting point of the legs following the line of the horizon. This optical illusion gives the impression that the legs have been cut off in reverse.

The purpose of the family album is to preserve the past and keep memories alive. However, when the vitality of the photographs is lost, they become "dead photos" and no longer serve their original purpose as family memorabilia. By severing the link between the present and the past, the act of amputation in the present allows me to detach myself from the past and take a permanent vacation from its grasp.
